Garden Ponds

All the family love garden ponds....

Here are Ten Tips to consider before you start digging your pond!

1. Think about waterfall features and power supplies, oh, and of course, water supplies!

2. Choose a spot in full sun, away from trees, especially trees with poisonous leaves.

3. Explore possible drains or bedrock areas, and avoid!

4. Keep to a simple shape, then you will have a more varied choice of liner for your garden pond, whether solid or flexible.

5. When estimating the size of your pond for liners etc; allow at least a half metre depth.

6. Creating a pond is not a one-man or woman job. Enrol some help!

7. Decide on water plants. Floating plants will prevent excess algae forming. Try not to let them cover more than 50% of the total surface area though. You can even get practical with plants. Watercress loves water! Some water plants need bedding in before you fill the garden pond.

8. Limit your fish to about a dozen per 4' by 4' area of your pond. And learn a little about the fish first....for example you shouldn't feed goldfish in autumn!

9. Plant border plants and rockery plants around all water features.

10. Then plant a nice bench with a comfy cushion and relax with your new water garden!

A garden pond can be a pleasure for years and so many extras can be added as you go along. Make additions to suit your time and budget. You could:

  • keep fish

  • grow beautiful water plants

and best of all, plant a nice comfy seat so you can while away the long summer evenings enjoying the peaceful sound of the water.
